Web of Modern Art caught up with Federico Infante for the opening of his solo show, We can see the Wind, at Punto Sull’Arte gallery in Varese, Italy. 

"...The works by Infante deserve a different special kind of attention as they invite the viewer for self-introspection, on the pursuit of one’s inner self that the superficiality and frenzy of our lives have often led us to forget. As the opening is about to start, Infante is walking with us through the gallery space, silently and with the same intimacy that his works require, recounting about himself and his life."

How did your childhood in Chile inspire your atmospheric fine art style? 

Chile is a beautiful place to grow up if you have a fascination with contemplating the natural space that surrounds you. I remember spending long hours of the day, even during school time, just looking out at the Los Andes Mountains. Throughout the day, you have the chance to see the chromatic change in light on this enormous natural monument. Sometimes in the winter mornings, there would be a blanket of thick mist as far as the eye could see, and it almost felt like you could touch the space between things. I know it sounds very magical—or maybe not all that different than any other place—but that’s how it felt to me growing up.

Quentin Garel's bronze animals are currently being exhibited at the Berkshire Museum in Massachusetts.

From the press release: "The family-friendly exhibition ArtZoo is on view at the Berkshire Museum this winter from January 23 to May 1, 2016.

Set out on an exciting excursion through ArtZoo and discover a magnificent menagerie of creatures portrayed in photography, painting, sculpture, ceramic, video, and more. This wild kingdom of animals from every corner of the world is grouped by species, as in a real zoo, and displayed with scientific specimens and engaging interactive stations.

Artists have been portraying animals and birds since the days of the cave paintings, andArtZoo is a panoply of such animals in art, showcasing loaned works of art created by contemporary artists and photographers as well as pieces gathered from the Museum’s permanent collections.

A stunning life-like rhinoceros head, cast in bronze by award-winning French artist Quentin Garel, is one of the centerpieces of the African savannah area of the gallery. An expressive turtle and a realistic ostrich, also bronze sculptures by Garel, have their own places in the galleries, both displayed with scientific specimens: a pair of real sea turtles and a life-size ostrich skeleton and enormous 10-inch eggs offer a sense of scale."

THE BONE MAGICIAN - SCULPTURES BY QUENTIN GAREL THE NATIONAL MUSEUM OF NATURAL HISTORY
From March 16 to September 12, 2016

For the first time in Compared Anatomy Galleries of Paleontology and the Museum, the sculptor Quentin Garel presents twelve works of proportions and unexpected materials; a contemporary nod to the classic animal sculpture. This exhibition extending into the alleys of the Jardin des Plantes, is designed for the museum and brings masterpieces and original creations of the artist.

"The Bone Magician" exhibition was born out of a shared interest, the museum and the artist, for the crossings and bridges between scientific disciplines and artistic practices, but also a common interest in natural history. Indeed, Quentin Garel develops a work of sculpture around two themes: the animal trophy and paleontological remains. His work opens a window on the complex relations that the man with the animals through their representation. The artist here offers the public a new experience: the discovery of sculptures, skulls arising from ghostly herd of galleries. Gigantism and material choices then give the works a totemic dimension. 

Quentin Garel shaping wood, bronze and cast iron, bringing originality and delicacy in the textures and excessiveness in the monumental size of the pieces. It arouses surprise by the scale changes to some of his sculptures: a cat skull weighing 80 kilograms a pink flamingo skull measuring more than four meters, one vertebra to the measurements arising extraordinary land! The exhibition will also present a major preparatory drawings unpublished formats of the artist, his sketches being integral parts of his work.

Born in 1975, Quentin Garel graduated from the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris (1998) and has been a resident of the Casa Velasquez. He lives and works in Paris and Normandy.
